CHINA’S ELECTRIFIED VEHICLE MARKET CLIMBS IN MAY: BYD, GEELY LEAD, EMERGING PLAYERS GAIN MOMENTUM

China’s industry for electrically powered vehicles maintained strong growth momentum in May 2025, with numerous manufacturers posting significant year-over-year advances even as monthly figures showed some variation. BYD continued to dominate the landscape, while Geely, Leapmotor, and Xpeng recorded the most substantial annual gains, with each firm more than doubling their output compared to May 2024. The monthly leaderboard underscores intensifying rivalry among established automakers, entrepreneurial ventures, and technology-oriented entrants.

GEELY CONSOLIDATES ITS MARKET STANDING

Geely Group reported total eco-friendly vehicle shipments of 138,021 units in May—an impressive 135.2% rise compared to the same month last year and a 9.9% increase from April. Within the group, the Galaxy brand spearheaded sales with 101,845 units, while Lynk & Co and Zeekr added 17,268 and 18,908 units respectively. From January through May, Geely’s total green vehicle sales reached 602,784 units, representing a 137.1% surge year-over-year. Despite Zeekr operating under Geely’s umbrella, it continues to function with an independent identity and its own distribution model.

LEAPMOTOR MARKS ACCELERATED EXPANSION

Leapmotor saw delivery volumes reach 45,067 units in May, up 148.1% over the same month in the previous year. By the end of May, the company’s total battery-powered car shipments for 2025 had climbed to 173,658, marking a 160.8% rise. Models like the C11 have found favor with value-conscious customers seeking advanced technology and affordability.

HARMONY INTELLIGENT MOBILITY, SUPPORTED BY HUAWEI, EXPANDS REACH

Huawei-backed Harmony Intelligent Mobility registered deliveries of 44,454 plug-in vehicles in May. The Aito M9 led the brand’s performance with 15,481 units, followed by the M8 (12,116 units), the upgraded M5 (4,889 units), and the M7 (4,139 units). In addition, the Luxeed R7 contributed 5,124 units, while the freshly introduced Stelato S9 EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) added another 2,000 to the tally.

LI AUTO CONTINUES TO GROW CONSISTENTLY

Li Auto posted 40,856 deliveries in May, reflecting a 16.7% increase year-on-year and a 20.4% improvement from the previous month. The company’s L-series range-extender models continue to resonate particularly well with family-oriented buyers. The brand’s cumulative electric vehicle sales for 2025 now stand at 167,659 units, up 18.7% compared to the same period in 2024.

XPENG POSTS REMARKABLE INCREASE

Xpeng delivered 33,525 zero-emission cars in May, a dramatic 230.4% increase over May 2024, though slightly down (by 4.3%) from April. Its X9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) accounted for 3,327 of those units and has held the top position in the high-end MPV segment for six consecutive weeks. Year-to-date sales for the company reached 162,578 vehicles, soaring by 293.1% over the previous year’s numbers.

GREAT WALL MOTOR AND XIAOMI MAINTAIN STABLE OUTPUT

Great Wall Motor recorded 32,638 clean energy vehicle deliveries last month, a 32.1% uptick over May of the previous year. Meanwhile, Xiaomi continued its consistent performance, with more than 28,000 SU7 sedans handed over in May—on par with its April numbers. The company is gearing up for the launch of its next product, the YU7, set to debut in the latter part of 2025.

MIXED PERFORMANCE FROM OTHER ELECTRIFIED BRANDS

GAC Aion shipped 26,777 eco-vehicle units in May, reflecting a 33.2% year-over-year decrease. In contrast, Deepal saw an increase, delivering 25,521 units—up 77.6% from the same time last year. Nio Group, which includes three distinct brands, totaled 23,231 unit deliveries: 13,270 from Nio, 6,281 from Onvo, and 3,680 from Firefly. The group’s year-to-date volume has reached 89,225 vehicles—an increase of 34.7% year-over-year. Avatr reported a significant gain with 12,767 deliveries in May, more than doubling its May 2024 result. Voyah also recorded a sizable jump, delivering 10,022 vehicles—up 121.7% from the same period last year.
